Top 5 Myths About Periods

  In India and many other places, “menstruation” is still a taboo topic. People generally do not talk about it openly.  it’s important to understand that a woman’s menstrual cycle is not the same as her period. The actual time that a woman bleeds is known as menstruation but her menstruation cycle is the entire time from one period starting to the next.

Here are a few popular myths and misconceptions about menstruation: 

    1. A menstruating woman is impure, dirty or cursed

Women who menstruate face discrimination and are told that they are dirty. Their bodies are undergoing a change in those 5 days. There is pain, odor and a lot that follows. Women are advised to stay away from crowds.  A menstruating woman is going through a natural and healthy biological process. She is shedding the egg that can result in the conception of a new life in her womb. It is a sign of a mature woman capable of reproduction.

2. A menstruating woman should not enter the temple

A menstruating woman will not “anger God” if she enters the temple. In olden days, when science had still not understood reproduction and the menstrual process, many myths and superstitions came about. They don’t hold any place today – menstruating woman is not “impure” – she is simply going through a normal bodily function.

3. A menstruating woman should not enter the kitchen

Traditionally, women avoid entering the kitchen or dining room. They even avoid cooking food. They eat in their room in isolation. She can enter the kitchen on any given day, anything she touches will not “go bad” or rot. She can maintain hygiene and go about her day just like she does on any other day.

4. Young girls are not allowed to use tampons

There are myths that by using tampons you can lose your virginity and that young girls therefore cannot use tampons. ‘virgin’ really means. A virgin is someone who has not had sexual intercourse. The hymen of a woman could break even with sports or other activities, and the presence of a hymen is not a measure of a “virgin”. Using a tampon is not related to virginity at all.

5. If you have your period, it’s better not to wash your hair

There is a myth to not get a hair wash during the five days of your period.

Especially when you have your period it is nice to take a hot shower to feel clean and relax. You can also just wash your hair while showering. This fable dates back to early times, but it’s not true, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t wash your hair.

Bhagwat Gita say about menstruation:-  There should not be any restrictions on women being regarded as unclean while menstruating at all.
